O’Leno 2021

O’Leno is April 30th – May 2nd. We will be doing things slightly differently this year. In order to social distance while sleeping , we will have less cabin space for folks. Ministerial Search Committee

The Board has formed a search committee for a contract minister for UUCJ: Jeff Funderburk has been a UUCJ member for many years, has been Board president twice, has made multiple repairs of our venerable buildings over the years, and has been very active recently as chair of the Worship Committee. Adaptation Task Team News March 2021

Climate change effects are increasingly stressing our planet.  A UUCJ Adaptation Task Team meets periodically to assess climate threats and advise UUCJ regarding its effects on our campus. Among these are: 1) occasional loss of use of the lower parking lot near the pond, 2) storm damage to the social hall, and 3) water overflow into our lift station.  Vulnerabilities in the social hall will be addressed in upcoming renovations, and parking lot work has received some thought conceptually.  Please contact Steve Settle…

UUCJ Birthdays

Next week we celebrate the birthdays of Fred Kerber on Thursday, March 18; and of Bob Harmon on Saturday, March 20. Please give them a call or send them a card to brighten their special day. Also express your condolences to Fred for his mother’s death, which was noted in last week’s eblast. Dorothy Kerber died at age 96 on Feb. 17, 2021. She was a well-known gadfly at the beach and will be missed.

Caring Candles

Long time UUCJ member, Gene DeLoach, age 104, passed away on December 28, 2020.  After her daughter went to college, Gene started college, completed a masters degree and worked as a speech therapist.  Prior to college, she used her sewing skills to start DeLoach House of Fabrics. Gene’s sister, Esther, died 6 weeks later at 106. A celebration of their lives is planned  for March 27, 2021 at Gene’s home in Atlantic Beach. Early last week, Marsha Collins fell in…

Special Collections

Despite the pandemic,  the response of our wonderful congregation to our special collections has been amazing.  In 2020 UUCJ donated over $10,000 to non-profits that benefit our Jacksonville community.  Considering we did not conduct collections for several months, this is a testament to the generosity of this community.  This includes:  Minister’s Discretionary Fund- $2804; Foster Closet- $616; READ USA- $3100 ( which was matched so we provided a virtual book fair to every student at Arlington Heights Elementary;) Don’t Miss…

Arlington Community Services Update

Keep on Trucking – 5, 10, or 20 lbs. at a time While we are below our weekly average, we will not know the actual status until the end of the month. ICARE Nehemiah Assembly

The ICARE (Interfaith Coalition for Action, Reconciliation and Empowerment) Justice Ministry Network (JMN) at UUCJ will be commissioned by Rev. Paul during the March 7 service.  One of the JMNs will be inviting you soon to the Nehemiah Action Assembly on April 19.  Plan now to say “yes”!

Caring Candles

Fred Kerber’s mother, Dorothy Kerber, 96, of Atlantic Beach, passed away on February 17, 2021.  She was a past member of Neptune Baptist Church, Beaches Hospital Auxiliary and had a passion for community service.  Condolences go out to Fred and his family.
