July 8th Speaker Bio: Basma Alawee

Basma Alawee came to the US from Iraq in 2010 with a BS in Material Engineering. Her experience of arriving in the US made her keenly aware of the issues refugees face, and she began to volunteer at several local organizations to help. She was selected as a delegate for Florida at the UNHCR Refugee Congress in 2013 and to be on the board of the Refugee Center online. Basma’s love of children and math led her to teach for five years at the Foundation Academy and to encourage the students to volunteer with newly arriving refugees. Basma is attending FSCJ pursuing a degree in accounting technology management. She is also a Florida Refugee Organizer with the Florida Immigrant Coalition and We Are America to advocate for and lift Florida’s refugees’ voices.

July’s Generosity in Action: Darlene Larsen

July’s Generosity in Action honoree is Darlene Larsen. Darlene did an amazing job this year on our Service Auction, spending countless hours spearheading our annual fundraiser: advertising, collecting auction items, creating the auction catalog, arranging food and drinks, keeping our volunteers on task, and organizing a silent auction that featured our first-ever online auction. Juggling all those tasks is no easy feat, and Darlene accomplished it with grace and aplomb. Thank you, Darlene, for all your dedication in making this year’s Service Auction successful and one to remember!

July 1st Speaker Bio: Katie Dalbey

Katie Dalbey became a member of UUCJ in 2010, shortly after moving to Jacksonville. She has been serving as a Worship Associate and member of the Worship Committee for the past several years, and is currently chair of the Worship Committee. Surprise GIFT CARDS for the 5 lucky ones who get the job done.
